Why I like business, but love tech
My experience transitioning from business to tech
Both of my parents studied IT at university. My father is a professor in the field.
Still (or maybe even because of this) I did not study IT but went into economics.
I always had lots of business ideas that I wanted to pursue, so I thought this would be the right choice for me. I liked math, the first thing I did when I turned 18 was to open a brokerage account. Fascinated by "One up on Wall Street" by Peter Lynch, I wanted to understand more about companies and their financials.
Fun Fact: My first investment was in a company called "Nvidia" back in 2018.
My good grades in my A-levels allowed me to choose any university I wanted to go to in Germany. Due to good rankings and the fact that it was rather close to my hometown (I had just turned 18 when I started), I chose the University of Münster.
Knowing my interests in tech and coding today, do I regret my decision?
A computer science Phd in my team at a Hackathon in 2022 asked me, what subject I was studying and I answered with "Business Administration". Usually people are a little surprised, but he just thought about it for a second and replied: "That makes sense, as students of business administration have nothing to do, they have a lot of free time (to learn coding :D )".
And he is totally right! While I enjoyed studying business administration, I had a lot of free time. So I was able to be a tutor, work on projects like mawiwi.de, do internships as a software engineer and actually work during my studies.
Therefore, I actually like my path. I really enjoyed all finance subjects and learning about management, as managing a team well is a very important skill to me.
I finished my degree in business administration in the top 6% of my class and do not think it was a waste of time.
The topics that made me study Business administration fascinate me to this day, so I would conclude that I like business.
But I love tech.
Why I love tech?
Being able to code, makes me feel like a magician. I can create something with close to no resources, that can potentially be used by millions of people. The startup costs are very limited, but the possibilities are endless.
I think, with my skill set, tech is the path, where I can have the biggest impact on the people around me.
Its community, its possibilities and the fun I have while coding, are the reasons why I love tech.
